What is Blu-ray?

Blu-ray is a format used for HD DVD storage. It commonly contains h.264 or h.265 encodings, making it somewhat easy to decode, but the container itself is hard to play. This is especially true for encrypted and copy-protected discs - which include most Blu-ray DVDs. Blu-rays may be ripped into various files, including ISO. Rippers remove the encryption, so such files are supported by more media players.

To play Blu-ray movies on a Mac, you need one drive that can read such discs. You could also play ISO Blu-ray files directly, making the player optional. If you have the Elmedia Mac Blu-ray player installed, simply insert the disc, click on Open File in the app, and browse until you find the ISO file and play it.
While VLC does not support Blu-ray discs directly, if you upgrade to the 2.0 version or newer, you will be able to make the player support Blu-ray media after a couple of extra steps. So, the answer is yes, you can make VLC play Blu-ray discs on your PC, but it will not be as easy as it would be on Windows, and some extra operations will be required.
