VLC Media Player

It’s safe to assume that most of us have come across or even used extensively the all-too-familiar VLC Media Player at some point in our lives. Much like Elmedia, this player is also a good solution on how to play Bluray on Mac, that is, if you’re using the newer versions following the 2.0 one. But even if you’re not, you can still upgrade your current version to a newer one in order to playback Blu-ray. On the downside, installing VLC on your Mac is not as easy as you might think, and if you won’t be able to, there’s no need to worry – we still have one or two more quality players that made the list. Truth be told, VLC could have worked a bit more on its instructions, like a lot of other websites out there that provide advanced step-by-step installation guides. Also, JAVA installation is mandatory if you want the Blu-ray interactive menus working properly.

What’s cool about this mac Blu-ray software is the complete absence of ads or spyware. You can also customize the player in any way you like, so if you do manage to install it, you can reshape it based on your preferences. Unfortunately, VLC does not support all Blu-ray videos. As previously mentioned, you will need some help to get the menu started. The major problem seems to be 4k Blu-ray files, so you shouldn’t be too surprised if you will receive pop-ups informing you of revoked certificates.

mac Blu-ray software

Leawo Mac Blu-ray Player

The name may not ring a bell to many, and it might also be hard to pronounce, however, Leawo is a top Bluray software for mac that uses very limited processing power (about 4%). Thus, it will allow you to play both old and new Blu-ray files with no signs of slowing down the other programs running on your PC. This is practically a free video, DV, and music player that gives users full control of their media playback. Another thing that we like about this Mac Blu-ray player is the fact that it’s not region-specific. There will be some difficulties when opening Blu-ray discs or navigating Blu-ray menus, but nothing too radical. As for the menus, they allow users to switch between subtitle and audio tracks easily, but also to jump from one video file to another on discs with playlist option. If you’re not looking for something extremely advanced, this player will do the trick.

On the downside, the Leawo Mac Blu-ray player doesn’t support Blu-ray menus. It will take you a whole 60 seconds to download one disc, so we can’t say that it’s the fastest player either. But, as long as you’re only planning to play video or audio discs from start to finish, Leawo will do a pretty decent job. And as previously mentioned, there will be no room for spyware, nor any unwanted adds bothering you all the time.

Mac Blu-ray player

Macgo Blu-ray Player Pro

Relatively cheap, this is by far the best Blu-ray player software that we have come across. The reviews on Macgo are very encouraging, and although it does lack a few features, it's excellent at playing Blu-ray discs. While this is not free and in fact relatively expensive at $79.95, frequent sales knock the price down to as low as $39.95. The software loads discs in about 15 seconds and plays them flawlessly. It supports all menus with a clean and intuitive interface. Pre-roll ads/trailers can be skipped easily. The software supports BD-Live features when the option is enabled. A relatively significant feature for those who don't understand the full use of a Blu-ray remote is the 'virtual remote' that explains the reason for the colored buttons on a Blu-ray remote. All-in-all, this a very likable app. It is a bit on the expensive side, and it lacks 3D/4K UHD support, but that's very minor in the overall scheme of things.

After Elmedia, this is the best Blu ray player for Mac that we got our hands on. It’s not really cheap, but it has gathered an impressive number of reviews and testimonials up to this point. With a retail price starting at $79.95, you will most likely find it available for only $39.95. And while it may not have a multitude of features, it can load a disc in only 15 seconds and play it without any issues at all. It has a user-friendly intuitive interface, supporting all types of menus. There will be paid adds and trailers, but you can easily skip them. If you enable the option, Macgo supports BD-Live features as well. But one of the coolest features has to be the virtual remote. Bottom line, this is an easy-to-use app, a bit pricey, without support for 3D/4k UHD, but overall, a pretty competitive Mac Blu-ray software.
