Elmedia Player operates seamlessly as a Blu-ray player software for Mac. The company guarantees good quality playback, and it can easily be used as a 4k Blu-ray player and supports limitless audio and video formats. The software is a free Blu-ray player that also supports built-in PGS-subtitles and also permits downloading of external subtitles.

Elmedia Player

The Elmedia Player is boxed with a rich variety of features including a built-in web browser and video downloader; it also allows you to grab screenshots. It has a built-in search to stream videos without unwanted ads. The Elmedia player is available in two versions – an app as well as a website version. There's nothing to dislike about this Blu-ray player software, and we think it's the best blur ray play around.

VLC media player

Who hasn't turned to the humble VLC media player at some point in time or another? – It's free and highly capable of playing various formats. But did you know that the 2.0 and later versions support Blu-ray playback? By upgrading your old VLC player to a newer version that supports Blu-ray playback, you are all set to watch your favorite Blu-rays. Unfortunately, it takes some amount of expertise to download VLC media player on Mac. If you do manage to download it, good for you. If you can't – don't panic, we have some more players lined up for you.

VLC could have been a little more helpful with its instructions. Other websites seem to provide more instructions on installation and use than the VLC site does. Installing JAVA will be necessary to get the Blu-ray interactive menus to work.

What is nice about the VLC media play is that there is no spyware or ads. The software is highly customizable as well, so if you do get it working, you can personalize it to your liking.

Sadly, the player does not support all Blu-ray movies. Like mentioned earlier, some extra help is needed to get the menu running. 4K Blu-rays especially seem to face playback problems. Don't' be alarmed if warnings pop up on your screen warning of revoked certificates.

Leawo Blu-ray Player for Mac

A name that many might find hard to pronounce, but this is one of the best software available today. Not only does it borrow very little of your computer's processing power (only 4%) you can also play your Blu-rays – old and new ones, without slowing down any other programs running in the background. The player can double up as a free DVD, video, and music player while giving you full control of media playback. We like that it is not region-specific. Some setbacks include occasional difficulty in opening Blu-ray discs or navigating the Blu-ray menu. The menus allow you to easily switch between audio and subtitle track, as well as jump through video files on a disc that has a playlist option.

The downside of the Leawo Blu-ray player software is that it is unable to support Blu-ray menus. The software takes a whole minute to download a disc, so it isn't the fastest in that respect, and all-in-all it has a very drab interface unlike what one is used to on a Mac. If you are only going to watch or listen to a disc from beginning to end, Leawo will work just fine. Spyware does not get installed, and there are no annoying ads that pop up inappropriately. It works if you aren't bothered about its simplicity.

Macgo Blu-ray player pro

Relatively cheap, this is by far the best Blu-ray player software that we have come across. The reviews on Macgo are very encouraging, and although it does lack a few features, it's excellent at playing Blu-ray discs. While this is not free and in fact relatively expensive at $79.95, frequent sales knock the price down to as low as $39.95. The software loads discs in about 15 seconds and plays them flawlessly. It supports all menus with a clean and intuitive interface. Pre-roll ads/trailers can be skipped easily. The software supports BD-Live features when the option is enabled.

A relatively significant feature for those who don't understand the full use of a Blu-ray remote is the 'virtual remote' that explains the reason for the colored buttons on a Blu-ray remote. All-in-all, this a very likable app. It is a bit on the expensive side, and it lacks 3D/4K UHD support, but that's very minor in the overall scheme of things.
