Experiencing YouTube video issues? There’s a Remedy

If you’re having YouTube issues today, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve compiled a list of troubleshooting steps you can take to bring it back to life. Is it YouTube loading issues, YouTube video playback issues, or is the site inaccessible altogether? Learn how to determine whether YouTube is down for everyone or the problem is on your end - plus what you can do about it.

Check Whether YouTube Is Down

YouTube doesn’t crash often, but we’ve seen it happen. So before trying to fix anything, the first thing you can check is whether YouTube is having a complete meltdown.

To do this, you can go to either one of these two sites - Downdetector and Outage.Report. By crowdsourcing user reports, they will inform you about different issues users are reporting and where in the world they originated.

Also, whenever YouTube has major downtime, you will definitely read about it in the news. Go to Google News and perform a quick search for ‘YouTube down’ or ‘YouTube outage’. This way, you will see if news outlets have reported anything lately.

Does it seem like YouTube is working well for others? If that’s the case, take a look below for troubleshooting ideas.

Ways to Fix YouTube on Desktop

To resolve YouTube issues if you're using a desktop browser to access the site, try these suggestions below.

1. Update Your Browser

It’s always best to use the latest version of your browser. Popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox provide automatic updates but it’s a good idea to check (if you haven’t closed your browser in a while, for example).

To do so in Chrome, open the browser on your computer. At the top right, click on More (three vertical dots). Then, click Help > About Chrome to see which version you’re using.

In Firefox, click on the menu button (three lines or hamburger icon). Then, click Help and select About Firefox. You’ll see the version number there.

2. Clear Your Cookies and Cache

Next, you can try clearing your cookies and cache.

In Chrome, click More at the top right. Click More tools and then Clear browsing data.

Choose a time range (choosing All time will delete everything). Tick the boxes next to "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files". Click Clear data.

As a shortcut, you can paste chrome://settings/clearBrowserData into Chrome’s URL bar.

3. Disable Extensions

Some browser extensions may lead to compatibility issues with YouTube.

To manage your extensions in Chrome, at the top right, click More > More tools > Extensions. Alternatively, paste chrome://extensions/ into the URL bar and press Enter.

Click on each slider to disable the respective extension (switch to gray). After turning off each one, load YouTube again to see if the problem has been solved. If it has, leave that extension disabled. You can get in touch with the developer to inform them about the issue.

4. Check Your Internet Connection

While other websites may seem to be loading just fine, your internet connection may still not be stable enough, causing YouTube streaming issues. Thus, it’s best to look into this as well. Use Windows' Network troubleshooter to detect and solve potential problems. On Mac, there are also available tools such as Wireless Diagnostics.

If you’re experiencing YouTube login issues, try using your full email address to sign in, as opposed to your YouTube username. Emails and usernames are interchangeable, so this will get you signed into the same account.

YouTube sound issues might be prompted by your web browser. First, restart the browser and reload your YouTube video to see if this will solve the sound problem. If not, your next good move could be clearing your browsing history and cache. If you still have no sound on YouTube videos after this, make sure you check out our other article for more troubleshooting ideas such as volume controls, security issues, etc.

Your YouTube video playback issues may be due to several reasons. For example, your browser is often to blame. When your YouTube videos won't play, try refreshing the page first. Then, you can update your browser if needed, or clear your cookies and cache. And if you’re suffering from a slow internet connection, lowering the YouTube video quality can also do the trick. If your YouTube videos are loading but not playing after these quick fixes, we’ve prepared a whole separate article to help you identify and fix any possible issues related to Adobe Flash Player, restricted content, and more.
