Due to MPG files being common and useful, PC, Mac and Android users often look for a high-quality player app. Most multimedia players can open MPEG, so a good MPG player will be compatible with many codecs, whether MP4, MOV or FLV. We will present MPEG-compatible software on several platforms; most applications will be cross-platform.

1. Elmedia Player - Mac Only

Elmedia is a frequently-updated MPEG player for Mac that keeps introducing highly useful features, some of which can’t be found in other MPEG video players. Timeline preview, video tuning, subtitle search, playlist saving… And starting a stream via AirPlay2, DLNA or Chromecast is extremely easy - only takes a click. MPG is far from the only format that Elmedia can play, too: MKV, WMV, MP3, FLAC, AVI, SWF and many others are completely playable and can benefit from the same features.

2. VLC - available on Mac, PC, Android

VLC (VideoLan Client) is a multifunctional, multiplatform player that can open MPG, as well as many other formats. It’s free and open source, so it won’t cost anything to try. VLC offers a massive assortment of settings to work with, but some of its features are less developed than others. For example, its playlist interface is intuitively easy, whereas starting or receiving a stream may be very difficult. This is the case for PC and Mac; the Android version is heavily simplified, but rich in features nonetheless. While there is an iOS version available, it’s a bad unofficial port, so we don’t consider it to be available on that platform.

You’ll find QuickTime pre-installed on any Mac. It’s an .mpg player, and it also opens a limited selection of other formats - 3GP, AVI, MOV, DV, and a few audio formats. Despite its limitations, QT allows you to do many things, like screen recording, video trimming, audio/video merging, etc.

If you have Windows, you have Windows Media Player, a multimedia application for audio, video and pictures. MPG is one of the many formats it can handle, but it doesn’t stop there, opening many others like WMV, WMA, AVI, MIDI, M3U, AAC, CDA. Unlike many other players, it doesn’t require you to find music and videos; instead, it composes a media library out of everything it can find on your PC. WMP recognizes artists and albums - an advantage for music fans.

What Is the MPG Format?

MPG files are compressed according to the MPEG-1 standard. This is the same standard that regulates MP3 files, and it’s widely known for its all-encompassing compatibility. Despite that, there are disadvantages to using .mpg instead of modern formats like .mp4. For example, .mpg files are less efficient, storing less video and audio data at the same file size. Additionally, as time passes, MPEG may lose its compatibility, getting phased out in favor of new industry standards.
